it can be an outside box, it can be an inside card. The only thing that should matter to you is that it works (in general) and in the same protocol as your company. As they are the ones providing it to you, I wouldn't worry a lot. Afterall, it's in their best interest to have you hooked up (just threaten to switch to another provider if they don't fix it fast - always works ;)
