So, we're planning one family day trip while in England, and we were originally going to go to Bath, but the train tickets are a wee bit expensive, so we're exploring our options, and naturally I turn to you, my LJ friends, to help make the decision.

[Poll #1856059]

I'm leaning toward Stonehenge myself. It's been on my bucket list for awhile. What do you think?

I've been to Windsor and Hampton Court (same day actually) but Stonehenge! You can do the DW speech and everything!

Don't think I hadn't thought of that!

Even though it's expensive I'd go for Bath. Second place would be Stonehenge... cuz. It's Stonehenge!

I got the following information from this site:

http://www.salisburyguidedtours.com/stonehenge-2.htm

"There is an outer perimeter fence, but once you are through the turnstiles there is a piece of thin rope about 60cm/2feet high which keeps you back from the stones. The nearest you get is around 30m/yds away, but the view is still good. You won't be looking through a fence at Stonehenge.

"You should allow about an hour to walk around Stonehenge.

"There's no cafe and no restaurant. There is a coffee stall selling drinks, sandwiches, and baguettes. In the summer months there is an ice cream stall as well. Seating is outside so if it is raining, snowing, cold and windy there is no cover except in your car!

"During June 1st to August 31st, Stonehenge is open from 9am - 7pm."

I've been to Stonehenge once, in a rush as I was passing, and I really wish I'd taken my time. If the weather is good I'd definitely suggest taking a picnic and taking your time over it.

Just got back and went to Stonehenge. Bloody long bus trip out there and it was pouring down but I was glad I went. The audio guide gives you a great tour as you walk around the stones. It's an amazing bit of history and something to see.

Well I'd go for Hampton Court, an absolute must-see if you're keen on Tudor& Stuart history and well worth a day trip from London (take the boat one way if you do go). They have lots of people wandering around dressed in period costume playing various characters from the palace's history, e.g. Barbara Villiers. However, the palace gardens are being used for one of the cycling events for the Olympics so there might be closures and restrictions inn late July/August.

If you do choose Stonehenge then consider combining the trip with Bath, which isn't too far away, or, if stone circles & neolithic history really interest you then Avebury is within reasonable reach, too, with lots more stones, Silbury hill and the West Kennet Long Barrow, too. Definitely plan to see the stones as early in the day as you can, though, 'cos it gets very busy and your view won't be as good later.

My vote's for Stonehenge. When I went, it was WAY off tourist season (January) and it was really cool. Got a murky, misty overcast day. Appropriate Stonehenge weather. :)

Also had the rope treatment--couldn't touch or walk amid the stones, but it was still pretty cool. I have a book listing all the stone circles in the British Isles & France. Still hope to get back there and visit a few more someday.

My dad planned out renting a car and driving to Windsor on my first visit when I was seventeen but it didn't happen and I was really disappointed.
