I just found out that a college friend, Nina Troth, died two weeks ago. She'd had breast cancer, and the cancer eventually spread to her brain.

I last saw her in 2005. Just a little over 2 years ago actually, at the retirement party for Professor Rich.

I'm trying to be coherent here, but it's hard. I'm grieving for the loss of a friend, but also the loss of opporunities. Part of me thinks I shouldn't be this sad. Haven't seen her in years, we weren't best friends, but I can't help it. People who know had lost my contact info and couldn't get a hold of me, so I missed the funeral.

I've lost so many people in my life and never had the chance to tell them what they meant to me because I always think I'll have another chance.

I need to go cry for a bit.

She's third from the left, standing next to me.

I'm very sorry. Life has an unfair way of not being long enough...

Oh, honey, I had no idea she was sick! *hugs*

Nina and I both have the same first name, funny that neither of us use it.

Is that Lisa Consiglio on the left? Barb I recognize, and Nina now that I know it's her.

I feel so badly I wasn't able to get back to NJ for PR's retirement party.

Yeah, that's Lisa. She lives in North Carolina now.

I'd known Nina was ill, but at the time of the retirement party, she was in remission and doing fine. Apparently the cancer came back and spread to her brain, and they couldn't get all the tumors.

On my April 11, 2005 entry I have a photo of PR, if you're interested.

You are grieving for all the right reasons. I think missed opportunities and the loss of future opportunities affects all of us who develop a connection with someone in our lives. And that is something to feel sad about, all right, but memories? Memories will heal that. At least that's what I keep telling myself.
