charliesmum | Charlie: An Update

Today Charlie asked me how babies get in the mommy's stomach.

I froze, trying desperately to remember if the experts tell us to be vague at this age, or if we should keep it simple but technical, or just say 'Ask your father.'

Now you know I have always tried to keep things straightforward with Charlie*, and so I started to explain how boys have sperm in their penises, and how the sperm meets the woman's egg to make a baby, but then realised if i wasn't careful I would have to explain how the sperm gets to the egg, and I am SO not ready for that conversation. By this time, though, I'd committed myself, and tried to explain while being vague but technical, thus mixing the two pieces of advice, and probably didn't explain anything very well.

Fortunately his questioning didn't go beyond that.

Then his friend also taught him this joke that results in him displaying his middle finger. (his friend has older brothers) This led me to trying to explain how that is rude without actually using the phrase 'fuck you' anywhere in the conversation. So I told him it was like cursing with your fingers. Hopefully that will suffice.
