I was going to post this on
silverhill's journal, but decided it would be too much like hijacking her post, so I'm putting it here.
Yes, it has to do with Harry Potter.
I, once again, ordered the book from amazon.co.uk, so it isn't going to get here until at least next Friday. I can't help it, I'm a purist, and if that means waiting a week, so be it. Hopefully I'll find ways to distract myself in the meanwhile. I may have to hide from the interweb for awhile, because I tend to cave to spoilers.
Which brings me to my rant.
JKR kept hinting that there were going to be major character deaths, up to and including Harry himself.
I'm hoping this is all just 'red herrings', because if she does kill off one of the three - Ron, Harry or Hermione, I will be very upset. Mostly because it is a really, really stupid thing to do and might ruin the entire series for me. This may sound like sour grapes, but it really isn't.
Let's face it. Ultimately this is still a children's series and while I'm all for 'showing children death in a safe environment', to break so completely from the archetypical mold by killing off one of the big heroes would completely ruin the series.
That said, there are characters I would forgive dying. Neville, for example. I love him, and don't want him to die, but he's gone from comic relief to complex and haunted character and he deserves a complex resolution. I could see him avenging his family, but dying (heroically) while doing it. I also think Wormtail should die saving Harry - he owes Harry after all, and if she doesn't address that after making such a point of it in the 3rd book, then that's stupid too.
And while I'm on the subject of bringing things up, if she doesn't do something with the 'Voldemort took Harry's blood' thing, and the 'death veil' thing I will be so annoyed. Especially the veil. What was the point of even having the thing unless it is going to play a part eventually? Classic writing advice - a gun that is mentioned in the first act had better go off in the third.
Where was I? Oh, yes, character deaths. If any of the Weasleys have to die, I think it should be Percy. And I think Percy should be on Voldemort's side. Percy's whole character is ambition; he'd be a prime candidate for Voldemort's army. I might forgive Hagrid dying. It depends on the circumstance. Snape will probably die, whether it is on the good side or the bad side, I really have no idea.
Honestly though, I don't care who dies as long as it isn't Harry, Hermione or Ron. They can't die. The series needs a happy ending. It needs Harry, Hermione and Ron standing together, proving that love and friendship conquers all. If Ron, for example, is dead, then the entire theme of the book will be proven wrong.
