I'm proud to say this doesn't really happen to me. I've gotten into discussions but as soon as it becomes a full on argument, and I can tell the person isn't really interested in what I'm saying so much as wanting to argue, I just go away.
Probably the closest I came recently was a diference of opinion on the recent Doctor Who Christmas Special, but the person I was talking with was intelligent enough to read what I said and not take anything as a personal attack, and we wound up having an interesting conversation.
I enjoy reading those sorts of things. It amuses me, but I don't generally participate.
I actually defriended someone on FB recently, though, becuase I feared I might go down that slippery slope into internet arguing. And I never defriend.
She was some sort of vague high school acquaintance anyway, and has political views the complete opposite of mine. I managed to just scroll past her when she said things I thought were stupid, but the final straw was when she posted some quote from some 'soldier' that was basically a rant against repealing 'Don't Ask/Don't Tell' disguised as 'humour'.

Your FB friend sounds like a real winner. :P I have some "friends" who post stupid or inflammatory stuff like that, I just hide them from my news feed. I don't think I've defriended anyone, although I'm tempted to do a little culling of my friends list once the baby is born.
