It's Talk Like a Pirate Day

You know, I will never, ever understand the concept of SCUBA diving for fun. I just just about manage snorkeling and then only if I don't go too far out. When we went snorkeling in Hawaii I stayed over the reef so the ground didn't look too far away. Why people find it enjoyable to go deep into the water where sharks and things live I will never understand. Well, I mean, I'm sure looking at the pretty fishes and exploring underwater is fun on some level, I just couldn't do it. It's like skydiving. The scary outweighs the fun in my book.

Anyway...It's International Talk Like a Pirate Day, as my morning radio show was kind enough to remind me this morning. So, shiver me timbers and all that.

Oh - On Saturday we went to the Discovery Musuem as part of a larger activity day that I may expand on at a later date, and this Image hosted by Photobucket.com made me giggle. I don't know why it was there - The Discovery Museum is one of those 'please touch' places where children Learn Through Fun. I don't know if they sent the thing to the President, or if it was part of some national thing where he colored in pictures for children's museums throughout the land, or if it was just something he did during a UN meeting, but there you go. Good to know he can stay in the lines, at least.

Ah, but the scary is the fun. I know whereof I speak, having flung my body out of reasonably-serviceable aircraft quite a few times. The night jumps were the best....

AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY!

SCUBA diving is fun. Uncomfortable, but fun. To be honest, the things that turned me off about it were: the claustrophobia when diving in less-than-clear lake water; being so freaking cold the whole time that my fingers would go numb. Also, trying to haul my neoprene wetsuit over my damp and/or sweaty hips.

I got to dive in Hawaii and Mexico, and saw a reef shark (2' long) only once. The rest of the time, it was me looking at coral, and feeding CheezWhiz to grouper (they love CheezWhiz in the can, don't ask me why).

I loved that diving felt like flying. You just floated along, without having to worry (much) about breathing; just a check of the gauges every few minutes or so.

At least there's a place like that up there. There was a great one down on the coast we went to a few times. Of course there's nothing like that up here. Yet another reason to hate it here.

hehhe, scuba diving is wicked fun.....for me, free diving, snorkling and diving all hold a very real passion for me.....it sounds a little goofy, but it is very earthy, being in water...the element....the gentle pressure all around your body...seeing things no air breathers can see.....swimming with the fish, the turtles, the dolphins, the cuttelfish....all of them hav etheir own elegant beauty as they glide through blue...it facinates me beyond anything......i really think i missed my callign as a marine biologist.......and yes, sharks too, hehe....but mostly, they just swim away from you, and are doing their own thing....but i never hang around one long enough to give it a change to change its mind! *grins*

Well, next time you go, take pictures for me. That's about as close to fish as I want to get.

Theoretically I get why it would be fun, but I just couldn't do it. Scares me. I'm a big baby, I guess.

last year when we went to hawaii, i took over ONE HUNDRED pictures underwater.....i think i took a picture of every single creature in the reef....my husband said its the most boring photo album EVER! hehe! This year, i was BANNED from taking a SINGLE underwater pic! *grins*

But if ye be wantin' to touch sea life ecumenicably, spiritually and grammatically, ye'd best suit up in yer SCUBA gear and go to the floor, savvy?

Sorry, best I can do right now.

Argh! Really bad eggs!
