A tiny dream come true for Charlie

A new Asian food market opened up in Cherry Hill recently, and today my friend and I stopped there with Charlie on the off chance it sold Durains*, and sure enough:

It did.

Freaky looking thing, very oddly shaped, and really spiky. Painfully so, as I discovered when I picked it up to see if I could guess how much it weighed. A nice man who was shopping near by saw me take the photo of Charlie and so I explained how Charlie seemed so fascinated by them and has wanted to see one. He told me that 'if you like it, you'll like it, but if you don't you won't.' which I guess could be sort of zen. He also recommended going to the frozen section where they had small pieces of the fruit so we could give it a try before committing to the whole fruit, since to open it requires digging into it with your fingers and breaking it apart. Or something. So, we got a small sampling, but have yet to try it, as it is frozen. Will be tommorrow's dessert, I think.

*You may recall awhile ago I mentioned how he said Durains were his favorite fruit, and I thought he was making it up until someone pointed out it was a fruit that grew in places like Thailand

Big heavy painful objects. Sometimes you have to wonder how people even realized they were edible to begin with. It's probably absolutely delicious to compensate for it, though :-P

Ooo, I'm interested to know what you think! I wonder if they're less flavorful or memorably strong-smelling if they've had to travel from their country of origin, and so may be picked before they're fully ripe.

It's durian, btw. :)

I had some of one frozen, but I'm told that in freezing it loses some of its texture and isn't as good as the fresh fruit. I hope you guys like it, though!

Looks like a cross between a green pineapple and a porcupine.

I'm curious now s to how they taste. :)

Is this the H mart? Did you get fresh popped rice cakes?

Don't they smell really bad, but taste quite nice? I've never had one.

That is one happy, happy kid. And some ugly-ass fruit.

I've sat at English Bay and eaten one of those things with some friends. They smell something weird, but taste okay, just raw.

I laugh imagining a meal of bitter melon followed by durian dessert....

That's so cute, and so funny! Durians smell really bad. A friend of mine brought one over for a dinner party once, something new to try, and damn did it smell! You can get them in Chinatown around here. Another fun fruit is lychee.
