A tiny dream come true for Charlie

A new Asian food market opened up in Cherry Hill recently, and today my friend and I stopped there with Charlie on the off chance it sold Durains*, and sure enough:

It did.
Freaky looking thing, very oddly shaped, and really spiky. Painfully so, as I discovered when I picked it up to see if I could guess how much it weighed. A nice man who was shopping near by saw me take the photo of Charlie and so I explained how Charlie seemed so fascinated by them and has wanted to see one. He told me that 'if you like it, you'll like it, but if you don't you won't.' which I guess could be sort of zen. He also recommended going to the frozen section where they had small pieces of the fruit so we could give it a try before committing to the whole fruit, since to open it requires digging into it with your fingers and breaking it apart. Or something. So, we got a small sampling, but have yet to try it, as it is frozen. Will be tommorrow's dessert, I think.
*You may recall awhile ago I mentioned how he said Durains were his favorite fruit, and I thought he was making it up until someone pointed out it was a fruit that grew in places like Thailand
