Okay you people who watch American Idol, I have a question

Why aren't the people allowed to have an accompanist? Why are they expected to sing with no music? That doesn't seem like a fair way to judge someone's singing, really. I'll bet some of the people who are horribly mocked actually sound a bit better if they have music to guide them. Why don't they have music?

Or at least the sound of a shower running in the background, to make them feel comfortable.*

*Because people like to sing in the shower, that's why

...I was thinking about this earlier, actually.

I think the judges/producers choose to make the contestants perform acoustically for the precise reason you've mentioned - if you're singing with music, you can (to a certain degree) hide missed notes, and don't have to be perform 'perfectly'. If you're performing acoustically, it lets the judges see the natural talent of the performers. Like Bo's acoustic performance in the top 3 - without music, he had to hit every note, or the performance would have failed miserably.

(Sorry if this isn't very clear, and forgive any typos please, cannot seee what I've typed because of the rather large cat in front of the moniutyor.)

I agree with you, it just allows for the best performers to show their ablity.

Also I LOVE your icon, as a non Firefly/Serenity fan who was forced by friends to go to a midnight screening.

Why on earth did I type acoustic? I meant unaccompanied.

Because you have to be able to sing under the harshest of conditions. They're going to wind up with the 16 best singers. Why shouldn't they pick and choose?

Because then they couldn't totally humiliate the bad singers?

I agree with the reasoning of the first person who responded. Just wanted to say that I watch American Idol too. It's good times. I'm rooting for the girl who was abandoned by her mother, has a father in prison, and lives with her grandfather. And the 16-year-old from the middle-of-nowhere who sang so unbelievably well.
