Life and other aggravations

Firstly. Congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] ciara_belle for totally kicking arse on Jeporady. She's one smart person. It's interesting how much more fun that show is when you actually have a specific person to cheer for.

Secondly. Charlie is being kicked out of his after school program, mostly because the person who runs it has no concept of structured activities. She gives the kids things to do, but it's like 20 kids doing 20 different things. Charlie apparently 'scared' the other children too many times with his behavior. I also happen to think the other kids enjoyed pointing out Charlie's behavior because they couldn't wait to tell me. It was kind of cute in a way, they all gathered around me to tell me the things Charlie was doing, and then I told them that Charlie was Autistic, and his brain didn't work the same way theirs did. They were very interested. Now I need to a) try to find someone who can take Charlie after school and pick him up since I have no means of transporting him from school to after school care and b) check to see if they actually can legally discharge a child with special needs. It isn't part of the school system, so they probably can, but if I can at least buy more than 2 weeks time to find him some where else to go, that would be good.

Thank all the gods that I am working somewhere where they are very understanding. I was able to keep Charlie in my office this afternoon. My friend who works there uses her given name at work, but when she and I were in high school she was known by her middle name, Beth. So Charlie knows her as Beth, and was fascinated beyond anything that she was called "Veronica" at the office. He made sure he called her "Veronica" frequently.

So, is there anyone living in Southern New Jersey who is looking to make some extra money by babysitting an adorable autistic boy in the afternoons? Anyone?

Sigh.

That's horrid! I can't believe they can get away with that!

Unfortunately, no to the New Jersey part, or I'd volunteer, at least as a fill-in.
That's too bad, and must be major stress for you. Best of luck on your quest to find him someplace suitable. He really does sound cute, and bright (I just loved the "Veronica" thing for some reason--I can see how that must've seemed neat to him).

I'll totally babysit Charlie if you want to bus him to Boston every day after school...

btw, kicking him out of the after-school program is awful. does this have anything to do with that teacher you had written about awhile back?

and you know someone who was on Jeopardy?

*wants to smack the supervisor of Charlie's after school program* Preferabbly with a 2x4. Or a brick.

And now I wish I lived in South New Jersey, so that I could babysit for Charlie. He's such an adorable kid!

First things first...KERMIE!!! Love your Kermie icon! My best friend gave me a video 'The Best of Kermit' for my birthday one year. It was nice to have 'original Kermit' back. I miss Jim Henson.

Secondly - yeah, it's the same after school program. They don't seem to 'get' him, and I also think the other kids milk it, you know?

I wish you could baby-sit him, too! He'd like you, I'm sure. Boston would be a bit of a commute though! :)

[livejournal.com profile] ciara_belle is an LJ friend on my flist. She is one smart college student.

Oh that's nicht so gut. I would, except a) I'm a tiny lil bit far away and b) I'm at school in l'apres-midi. (You can tell I'm in language-induced panic mode, can't you!) I really hope you find someone for Charlie. Stupid after-school-type people. Hmph.
*is grumpy on your behalf*

[identity profile] charliesmum.livejournal.com 2004-11-17 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Now if they would just hurry up and invent transporting ala Star Trek, then you could babysit! :) Imagine being able to ship my son to England every afternoon!

Bon chance with the language thing!

Next year -possibly- I'd be able to help. But I can't. *sigh*

Schools are -horrible-. Poor Charlie.

Gosh, if I lived in NJ, I would totally watch Charlie in the afternoons! Lots of experience with kids, having been a summer camp coordinator for three years. Unfortunately, I've still got that whole Canada dream happening for me.

Is your after school care provider privately run or is it funded by the government? I believe that if it's the latter, your son cannot legally be removed from the program without having acted in such a way as to compromise the safety of himself or the other children. It sounds like the coordinator of the program is being discriminatory because she doesn't want to have to take to seconds and create a structured program.

...and by "to seconds" I of course mean "two seconds".
