Charlie, as I may have mentioned, has recently been enamored of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie. It is currently number one on his hit parade, and to see him singing and dancing along to the Oompa-Loompa songs would warm the coldest heart.

He has, on occasion, mentioned how he wishes he could have a Wonka Bar, to try and find the golden ticket. Not seriously, and not in any kind of Verruca Salt way, it's just a wish he was expressing.

This weekend I was down at my parents' house, and there is a store in Smithville called The British Connection (and yes the woman knows me by sight, why?) and I wandered in there to get a packet of mix for Shepard's Pie, and asked if she had any Wonka Bars, vaguely thinking it might be something the British actually made.

They did.

It wasn't a big bar, it was long and thin and called something like Chocolatey nut surprise, because, while it tasted like nuts, it didn't actually have any nuts in it. Or something. So I of course buy the bar and bring it outside where Charlie and my mother were waiting.

"I have a surprise for you," I tell my son, and have him reach into the bag.

I wish you could have seen his face when he saw it was an actual Wonka Bar. He stared in wonder at it a moment, his eyes getting bigger and bigger, and his whole face just lit up with this beatific smile.

He waited until we got back to my parents' house to open it, and did so reverently. Alas, no Golden Ticket* was forthcoming but my Charlie, just like Charlie Bucket, bore the disappointment bravely and, entirely unbidden and with a sort of solomnity, shared his chocolate with his mother and his grandmother. Just like Charlie Bucket shared his.

(I did sneak back and buy him another one to put in his stocking.)

*The prize for finding the ticket with this particular bar is a trip to the United States. How ironic would that be?
