The first casualty of war is the truth
May. 20th, 2004 01:32 pmThis story: http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/05/20/iraq.attack/index.html bothers me on many levels, the first, of course, being the idea that innocent revelers were killed by American troops, and the second being the idea that either the Iraqis or the Americans are lying about the incident. Both would have reasons to lie after all. The Iraqis to make America look bad and the Americans to cover up doing something horrible and stupid.
Yesterday my husband brought home the local newspaper, and in it were two separate stories about grieving families in the South Jersey area who lost sons in the war. I realised then that this war is really becoming a war. The last Gulf war happened so quickly that there wasn't much time to talk about the dead, and besides people were so busy trying to make up for being mean to soldiers during Vietnam that not much attention was paid to the ones who didn't make it. But this time around, it's been long enough that the death toll can't help but be noticed.
