Happy Thanksgiving
Nov. 25th, 2004 09:24 amThanksgiving, America's starting gun for the winter holidays, a day where everyone tries to emulate that Norman Rockwell painting to varying degrees of success, a full day of anticipating a meal that lasts probably 15 minutes, and a day where we're supposed to stop and reflect on things that we are thankful for.
So here's my list. I'm excluding family members because I like to think that goes without saying.
I'm thankful I found alternative after school care for Charlie, and thankful it is with someone who cares for him so much.
I'm thankful for my friends, Beth, Kathryn and Trish. We share memories dating back to the early 80's, and I'm particularly lucky to still be making memories with them 20 years on. I'm thankful that all our children are close in age, and, despite being obligligated to be friends, actually are.
I'm thankful for all my Live Journal friends. Despite the cynicism I feel about the world at times, I really feel that reaching out in friendship to people, even if it is only 'virtually', helps spread a little kindness throughout the universe. I know that everyone on my flist, when they do say something like 'good luck' or 'I wish I could help' they really mean it, and they know that I mean it as well, and to me, that makes you real friends, even if we never meet in RL. The best thing about the inernet, I think, is that you are able to find people who share your interests, no matter how obscure, and that makes a person feel a little less alone in the world.
I'm thankful Reality TV hasn't totally taken over the world and there are still a few good, fictional shows on the telly.
Charlie, so you know, has informed me he is thankful for the following:
Mommy
Daddy
Butch (our cat)
Gameboy
So enjoy your big, calorie laden meal, I hope the relatives don't drive everyone too crazy and that politics isn't brought up at the table, especially if it is prefaced with something that completely makes you want thow a serving fork at the speakers head.
To non-Americans, have a nice day. :)
