Aug. 31st, 2008 12:00 amOkay, so we had a 9 hour rehearsal today, and then went out to eat, so I only just got home about 20 mintues ago.
The front door to my building was unlocked and the door wasn't completely shut. This was odd for two reasons. One, I locked it before I left at noon today, and two, my downstairs neighbor who shares the door is practically paranoid about keeping that door locked.
So I walk into the hall, cross to my stairs and notice my downstairs neighbor's door is ajar. This is even weirder. It's 11:30 at night, and again, she just doesn't do that.
This is the neighbor, mind you, who has the 'sometimes verbally abusive boyfriend' whom I've heard yelling and is the reason the cops have been here at least 3 times since I've moved in.
So, naturally, I'm a bit concerned. I go to the door, and I knock, and I call out her name. No answer. I can't see anything because she has a sheet or something over one door, and all the lights are out. I stand in the doorway for a ridiculously long time, wondering what to do, while every cop show I've ever seen and every mystry story I've ever read flashes through my mind.
However, I don't particularly want to find a dead body at this point in my life, and besides, it didn't feel right to go creeping into someone else's home, so I eventually go upstairs and call the police. I explain to the guy everything I said in the first few paragraphs, and he says he'll send someone.
I go wait outside, and a few minutes later 3 police cars pull up.
There really isn't much that goes on in Collingswood, I think.
So I'm told to 'wait outside ma'am,' while they go in. They are in there just long enough to make me begin to think maybe the poor woman really is dead when one officer comes out. He doesn't look grim, so I relax.
She isn't in there but Abusive Boyfriend is. Officer guy talks to me, mentions how they've been called out before, and sometimes AB is 'allowed' there, and sometimes not, so they are not sure what is going on. Meanwhile, I'm allowed to go into own flat. The last thing I hear is one of the officers asking the guy if he has a number where my neighbor can be reached.
They left a few minutes later, and as far as I know they didn't take him with them, so I don't know what the deal is.
I am alone right now, and a bit worried that the guy is going to come up and yell at me or something. He hasn't yet, so I am hopefully okay.
It was a very strange way to end a day.
