Did I ever mention my theatre group's new house band, Antic Disposition? (Find us on We're on Facebook!)
It was an idea we shamelessly stole from the American Shakespeare Company, and debuted during Wars of the Roses. I'm in the band, obstenabily as a back-up singer, but mostly, probably, because I was the one that thought of the band's name.
This show I'm singing lead, doing Blondie's The Tide is High.* Now, The Tide is High is a song I've been singing along to for *does math* oh, gods, 30 years, generally singing into my hairbrush while I tried to will myself into looking like Debbie Harry. And, as you know, I've been doing karaoke, so singing should be a piece of cake.
Except it's totally not.
My 'comfort zone' is fairly large, all things considered, but this, proper singing with a real, live band, with no beer to ease the nerves bloody terrifying.
However, 'Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone', as someone more clever than I once said, and I'm determined to get past my fear, and to do this.
And if I don't actually suck while doing so, that will be a big bonus.
How about you lot? What things have you done that surprised you?
*Because the show is The Tempest, that's why.
