Ohhh, this isn't contraversial at all.
When I was in the sixth grade, I did a report on Frederick J. Banting, the guy who invented insulin. I read some YA biography about him, that must have been extremely well written, because it really stuck with me, and he became one of my heroes. I was convinced, if he hadn't died in a plane crash, he'd have invented the cure for cancer.
He used dogs, if I remember correctly, when working on his research. I don't remember being unduly upset by this piece of information, although I'm sure I was a bit bothered by the idea.
However, at the end of the day, the man invented Insulin, a drug that literally saved thousands and thousands of lives.
I'm against animal cruelty. That's an entirely different breed of cat, and there are things scientists do that are not necessary, and therefore fall into that category.
If there's a way to invent cures and things without using animals, I'm all for it; I think that's a better choice, I really do.
But, if I have to chose between the life of a dog and the chance for some horrible disease to be cured, then I'll choose the cure.
