Take the minor role. It'll pay off in the long run, as The Theater Powers That Be will have a chance to see you in action.
In theater, as in many other professions, one should expect to spend some time as an apprentice, before moving up to more prestigious positions. I suggest that you view going on stage in a minor role as your first step on the journey to top billing.
