Thoughts on Snape

Want your opinion on something.
I was thinking about the memories Snape gave Harry, and trying to decide if he really needed to give Harry all that information.
At that interview thing, JKR did say that Snape wouldn't have done it if it weren't for Lily, and that she didn't think he was a 'hero'. He was what he was, mean, bullying, dark, etc.
That got me thinking about the memories, and why he showed Harry everything he showed him.
He could've started at the bit where Dumbledore finds out he's only had 1 year left to live. That would still prove he was on Dumbledore's side, and give Harry the information he needed. All the stuff about him being in love with Lily and being friends with her for all those years wasn't necessarily, er, necessary.
So, I was wondering if Snape was holding out a peace offering; giving Harry both a glimpse of his mother and an idea as to why Snape was the way he was, or if he was just trying to say to Harry, "I didn't do it for you, or Dumbledore or anyone. If it wasn't for your mum I wouldn't have cared at all."
I'd like to think it was the former; that he wanted someone to know he loved once, and cared deeply for someone, but it could just as easily be the latter.
What do you think?
