Been meaning to do this for awhile now. Below is the autograph of Jon Pertwee and Elisabeth Sladen that I got way back when.

Back then, Tom Baker was "my' Doctor because those were the episodes that were on PBS when I first discovered the show.

In 1983 some friends of mine, who were English, invited me to go with them to this Doctor Who convention in Philadelphia. The guest stars were Jon Pertwee and Elisabeth Sladen. AKA the 3rd Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith.

Before they came out they showed a 'lost' episode, which happened to be a 3rd Doctor episode, so at least when he arrived on stage I had a passing acquaintance with his Doctor. One thing I remember was someone asked him why all the aliens spoke English, and he did about 30 seconds speaking in gibberish (or possibly a real language, I have no idea) before pointing out that, if the aliens didn't speak English, we wouldn't know what they were saying. I think of that every time the mention in New Who that the TARDIS translates for anyone who travels in it.

Someone in the audience had made a K-9, and was allowed to bring it on stage, and Elisabeth S. bent down, gave it a pat, and said 'hello K-9' in a genuinely affectionate tone of voice.

Jon Pertwee, at the time, was doing a show called Worzel Gummidge. I actually KNEW what Worzel Gummidge was, as one of the stories was in a book I owned and had read about a billion times. Anyway, my English friends had a younger sister who had liked that show, and who had a Worzel Gummidge doll, so they brought it to be autographed.

When it was our turn for autographs, he was so surprised to see something non-Doctor related, he actually spoke to us all for a few minutes. You could FEEL the jealously of the people behind us.

Anyway he as where they were from. Asked me if I was from the UK as well. Said he liked my hat. I was so happy about that because, well, I was into wearing hats at the time, and I picked the one I was wearing because I thought it looked appropriately 'companion-y'.

Then we got Elisabeth Sladen's autograph, and she liked my hat too. So there.

Not long after that, coincidentally, PBS started showing some Jon Pertwee episodes, so I got to know his Doctor a bit more.

So, even though Tom Baker was my first Doctor, I think of Jon Pertwee as 'my' Doctor, because he was the one I met. And who liked my hat.
