You know, it really does take a village

Yesterday my friend's daughter had a meltdown, and my friend was feeling horribly guilty for yelling at her, because her daughter, who's 8, ran upstairs with the 'everyone hates me' attitude she isn't supposed to develop until she's 12. My friend asked me to go talk to her, and I did, and, much to my surprise, she listened. It helps that I'm not her mommy, and I was able to appeal to her as a friend. I don't think what I did will have a lasting impression, but it felt nice to smooth the one little bump out. And my friend, in turn, has helped me on many occasions with my own son. So it is nice to have other influences in your child's life, and it is nice to know I have people I can turn to if necessary.

In other news, I did the walk for NAAR yesterday. It was beautiful weather, and there were over 3000 people there. Between myself and my friends, we managed to raise $400 for the cause, so that was nice.

The ironic thing about the walk is there were so many people, and so many things going on at once, it was not the ideal place to take an autistic child. Charlie mostly handled it fine, he said in the wagon playing his gameboy, but at one point his balloon animal fell out and popped and he cried quite fiercely, which isn't like him. I think he was just on edge. A very nice passing woman gave him a balloon she had, and that helped.

I'm a little achy today, but 4 miles isn't so bad, and it was a nice day to be outside.
