Sep. 3rd, 2005 04:11 pmJust got back from the Bat Mitzvah. M., my neighbor, did a fantastic job. She has a great singing voice and speaks very clearly. Apparently she read a longer portion of the Torah than anyone ever has before. It was really sweet - she picked this bit in Numbers about this guy who had 5 daughters and no sons, and the daughters didn't want his father's name to be lost forever, so they asked a man to speak to Moses about it and Moses agreed, and so the girls were able to inherit their father's things as long as they married in their tribe, which they did. She chose this bit because she feels it is important to remember that sometimes change is good. She really did an excellent job. She'd make a good Rabbi, actually.
The celebration was quite nice, too. The DJ guy had all these fun games for the kids to play and the food was fantastic. I really, really enjoy the Hora dance. It is so amazingly joyful. It occured to me perhaps it is so joyful because for so long the Jewish people were surrounded by hardship, and they learned to live in the moment and celebrate the good times as hard as possible.
Charlie really enjoyed that too. He kept squealing, "She's flying in the chair!"
So then at ten of four, I get a call on my cell phone from the bakery about Charlie's birthday cake, asking when I was going to pick it up. It had slipped my mind, so I said very soon, and she said 'We close at four.' Fortunately we weren't too far from the bakery and got it with time to spare. It looks really good, too.
Now I have to go and continue cleaning and stuff.
