On Gilmore Girls Logan the Rich Boyfriend bought Rory a 'Birkin Bag'. She didn't know what it was, and I didn't either. Apparently it's a big status symbol thing. And my Googling brought up some results that tell me the thing costs at least $300.

I don't get that. Maybe because I can't even fathom having $300 to throw away on something that is simply a place to put my keys, wallet and cell phone, but the bag isn't even that great. It's a literal handbag, no shoulder strap, which I have always found to be inconvient.

So I guess that's its point. It says 'Look at me! I'm so rich I can drop hundreds of dollars on an accessory, and I don't have to bother myself with trivial details like carrying grocery bags, so I don't have to keep both my hands free.'

Or something. I don't know. It's early.

First I would like to apologise to [livejournal.com profile] dindin, whom I inadvertently insulted, I think, with my earlier rant about the Birkin bag. I fell into the trap of Rich=out-of-touch, elitist snobs, and assumed that anyone who wanted to spend lots of money on an accessory fell into that category. She pointed out, rightly, that some people save up and buy expensive things because it makes them happy, and that there is nothing wrong with that.

Secondly, apparently I was incorrect about the price of Birkin Bags. They cost something between $5,000 and $18,000 according to the thread on Television Without Pity. (Sidenote, I really have to stop reading the Gilmore Girls forum there because they bitch about the show more than anyone.)

I do wonder, if by some twist of fate I did find myself with lots of disposable income, what kind of things I would do with the money. I've always had rather expensive taste, but it is tempered, I flatter myself, with practicality.

I don't really like things that don't serve a purpose, and I don't think I'd buy a handbag that you couldn't carry on your shoulder simply because it is the thing to have, because I find the short handled bags to be annoying. I go for comfort and style over trendy, and I don't go for overly ornate decor.

Who knows? It is possible I'd go mad buying things just because I could, though I like to think I would manage to avoid the temptation. *glances upward to any god who might be listening* It would be nice to have a chance to prove that wealth wouldn't spoil me.

My friend is on a business trip, and isn't sure she remembered to set her VCR to tape Gilmore Girls, and our TV isn't set up to tape (Long story why - short version, husband can't be arsed to mess around with complicated wires and things) so I'm going to do a brief recap here for her. Feel free to ignore.
