So I got an email that tells me my extra icons are about to go bye-bye unless I pay up, and the logical part of my brain is telling me not to bother, that I hardly use every icon I have anyway, and I can make do with what I have.

However, the other, much more aggressive part of my brain is jumping up and down and shouting, "Oh, noes! We can't lose the icons! We loves them precious!" and so forth.

You won't just have 15, I have like 32 or 33 with the paid account. LJ faqs say you get 30 with a paid account and then one for every three months paid time you (or someone else has bought) and then one bonus userpic for every continuous 12 months of paid time applied to your account.
Anyhow, you won't have just fifteen, you'll have 30 something of them.

IIRC (my memory is a bit fuzzy on this, as I've never had a paid account, so this never applied to me), if you allowed a paid account to revert to free status, any userpics you had uploaded remained. However, FAQ #193 indicates that any usepics over what your account is currently authorized are inactivated. The userpics most used in journal entries over the past six months (use in comments is not a factor) are the ones that remain active. Finally, inactive userpics still show up in the posts in which they were used, at least for six months (inactive userpics are removed from the server at the six-month mark).

Note that for a Free account, there's a limit of six active userpics (Free but ad-plagued Sponsored + accounts can keep fifteen active userpics).
