Found my ring. It was in the bathroom under a towel. Don't ask me why. It must have come off when I was drying my hands or something, which is super weird. I mean, I've dried my hads a million times over the last 20 years, and it never fell off before.

Anyway, thank any God who is listening that I found my ring. It was odd, too. I was in the bathroom, I picked up the towel to dry my hands and heare this metallic clink. It could have been one of the little tool thingies the Husband still hasn't put away, but I thought it sounded like it could be a ring, so I searched around and there it was. Huzzah.

And, in silly news, I wrote a fan fic for Torchwood. If you don't know the show at all, or don't like vaguely girly slash, feel free to ignore. If you DO know the show, it has slight spoilers up through the most current episode.

It was quiet in the hub. Owen and Ianto had left for the day, and Jack disappeared to wherever he goes when he wasn’t being the boss. Tosh and Gwen were still at their workstations; Tosh was attempting to complete the translation program she’d been working on and Gwen was finishing up some paperwork.

At least that’s what she told the others. It was just getting harder and harder to go home to Rhys at night, to walk into a world where things like human cannibals, sex aliens and mind-reading pendants didn’t exist, to pretend that Torchwood was just a job and that Owen was just a co-worker.

“You alright, Gwen?” Tosh asked suddenly. “Only that’s the third time you’ve sighed in the last two minutes.”

“Was I? I hadn’t realized. Sorry.”

“Not a problem.” There was an awkward silence. Gwen still wasn’t sure how to approach Tosh. She wished they could be friends; in the boys’ club that was Torchwood, it would be nice to have a woman to confide in, but now there was this sort of coldness between them, brought on by whatever Tosh had heard when she had the pendant. That and Owen. She wished they had more in common, something that would bridge that gulf and bring them closer.

Well, Gwen thought, that wasn’t strictly true. There was one thing they had in common. Ever since the pendant incident, Gwen wanted to find a way to broach the subject, but it never seemed like the right time, but now, in the silent hub, both of them hurting in different ways, maybe it was time to take the plunge.

“Erm, Tosh? I was wondering something. Silly really, but I feel like I have to say it, and you’re the only one I can say it to.”

“Yes?” Tosh turned away from her computer screens, wary. “What is it?”

“Remember Carys? When I was in the cells and I, erm, well, snogged her?”

This brought a slight smile from Tosh. “Yes. I remember.”

“I remember thinking at the time that I couldn’t believe I was feeling this way for a girl, you know? But it wasn’t a girl, it was an alien in a girl’s body, so I figured, yeah, that explains it, I’m not into women, it was the alien influence, right? But, the thing is, ever since I’ve sort of wondered if, well, how much of it was alien, really, and I thought, well I wondered if you’d wondered too.”

“About you, you mean? I’ve given up trying to guess anyone’s sexual orientation in this place.”

“No,” Gwen said, blushing. “I mean, Mary was an alien in a girl’s body too, so you and I had a sort of similar kind of an experience.

Hurt made Tosh’s voice sharp. “I don’t think it is similar at all.”

“No, perhaps not,” Gwen turned back to her own computer. “Sorry.”

“No, I’m sorry. You’re right, I did wonder, I do still wonder what it was that drew me to Mary. At least with you, it was that alien sex pheromone thing. With Mary I felt like she was someone I could really be with. She knew about,” Tosh paused, gesturing vaguely at the instruments around them, “this stuff. She was someone I could connect with. It didn’t seem to matter that she wasn’t a bloke, you know?”

Gwen nodded sadly, thinking of poor, trusting Rhys, waiting at home, and Owen, whose touch she still could imagine tingling throughout her body. Someone to connect with, yeah, that’s all anyone really wants in a relationship, in the end.

Tosh smiled; the first genuine smile she’d had in days, “Jack has said something on more then one occasion when someone talks sex. ‘You people and your quaint little categories,’ he says. Maybe it’s his influence. He doesn’t seem to worry about what a person is just that…”

“They’re gorgeous,” Gwen finished, laughing. “True. Do you ever, no, forget it, it’s stupid.”

“No, go on, tell me.”

“I find myself wondering what it would be like snogging a proper girl, not an alien. Just out of curiosity, like.”

Tosh grinned, “Yeah? So have I, actually.”

“See, I knew you’d understand.”

The two women stared at each other for a long moment, then, moving slowly, like someone afraid to frighten a timid animal, they leaned forward until finally their lips touched. Softly at first, tentatively, then each abandoned themselves to the kiss and it got deeper and longer and more passionate until finally, breathless, they pulled away.

“So,” Gwen said finally, her voice deep with emotion, “Now we know.”

“We sure do.”

“It was nice.”

“It was nice. Very, very nice.”

They turned back to their workstations, and spent several minutes pretending to be very busy. “So, Gwen?” Tosh said finally, “fancy a drink?”

“Thought you’d never ask,” Gwen replied, grinning. They sprang from their chairs, grabbed their coats and headed to the door, giggling.

The door slammed shut behind them and the hub was empty, its secrets all tucked away for the night. In the silence, broken only by the leathery sounds of the pterodactyl’s wings as it flew lazily around; the gently falling water from the fountain sounded a lot like rain.

I've posted this on the [livejournal.com profile] torchwood com as well, just FYI.

What, the pterydactyl's not dead? I dont' think we've seen it since the end of Ep 4.

And, not a critique of this story, but...um, isn't "gorgeous" a category too? *grin*

Thanks, that was fun.
