The Music of the Night

Just got back from seeing The Phantom of the Opera - movie. It was good. Better than I'd thought even. I thought the guy playing the Phantom had a great voice. My only complaint would be the fact that he was pretty darned good looking. It was hard to get too afraid of him. Well, okay, so he killed people. Still...he was good looking, even after his mask was off.
My brain also kept tossing Terry Pratchett at me as I watched the film - scenes from "Maskarade" kept popping in my head. The first time a note dropped dramatically to the floor, all I could think of was 'Ahhahhaaahaaha!!! Yrs. The Opera Ghost.'
Also, Paul Kirby was the art director for the film, thus enhancing the whole Terry Pratchett vibe. I want to see it again, just to see if I can spot any possible Discworld shout-outs hidden in the scenery.
I quite enjoyed the movie; I'd forgotten how much I liked the music from it, and I think they did a nice job of translating it to film. All the actors were quite good - Minnie Driver was really funny as Carlotta, and the singing was lovely. So, it gets a thumbs up from me.
Good night, and happy new year!

on 2005-01-02 04:34 pm (UTC)I'm going to try to bribe Real Life Mother to take me to see it. I'm a huge Phantom of the Opera fan, and a huge fan of Paul Kirby. And a fan of music. All the best things combined.
-Cyber-Daughter, who already has a minor crush on Erik, and it shall probably become a huge crush by the time the movie is over.

on 2005-01-03 01:37 am (UTC)I do wish my friend had read Maskarade, though. There were so many times when I wanted to turn to her and say something like 'cheese merchant' or 'that chandelier looks like an accident waiting to happen' or similar, and she just wouldn't have gotten the joke.
You will like the movie. Tell Real Mom she'd like it too.
Erik the Phantom is just way too cute. You will have a serious crush on him. I shudder to think of all the Phantom Mary Sues that even now are redeeming Erik and keeping him from smashing the chandelier and all that.

on 2005-01-03 10:14 pm (UTC)Oooh, me too. Or that someone else in my family had read it, so that I could go with them. Perhaps I shall get someone to read it before it comes otu closer to us than Albany...
