I really wish I could think of something to say about the tsunami, out of some need, I suppose, to be deep and profound occasionally here on my journal, probably so people will go 'wow, she's deep and profound'.

The truth is, it is too big for me to get my mind around, and I think I'm avoiding the subject because it is just so sad. I did read this nice story today, though. A boy was saved by his dog. The mother could only grab two of her three children, so she hoped the eldest, who was 7, was old enough to run for it unaided. Her younger ones were toddlers I believe. Anyway, the kid went in the wrong direction - thinking he'd be safe in this hut or something, and the dog actually ran after him and grabbed at him and basically herded the kid in the right direction. Meanwhile, the mother is sure she left her son to die, and is heartbroken until she sees him and the dog coming toward her.

I think we need those kind of stories. I can't bear to think of the stories that have bad endings.

So I'm sitting here, thinking of these things, and two minutes later my own 7 year old comes into the room, asking where the 'smores sticks' are, so he could stick his perloined marshmallow on it. (He also asked if I would 'find the fire' so he could toast said marshmallow, but I said no.) So here I am, giggling at my son and his marshmallows, and thinking, life really has layers, doesn't it? I'm bloody lucky to have a 7 year old wanting marshmallows rather than sitting in a makeshift shelter somewhere while I thank whatever god happens to be listening that my dog was there.

I read the same story today on Yahoo! I feel the same as you and Melinda is so sensitive to it, that she does not want to even watch any of the video's I can't blame her, I guess I do so I can some how understand the magnitude of what has happened over there.

I read that story as well. Apparently the dog grabbed the boy by the collar of his shirt and dragged him up a hill to safety. All of the experts are saying that animals have a sixth sense about these things.

If you're looking for heartwearming stories amidst the tragedy:

Reuters: "Girl Saved Tourist Thanks to School Lesson"

The Tribune: "20-Day-Old Child Survives Tsunami"

I completely believe that! My hubby and I have seen it from our two kitties.

I know what you mean. There's not a whole lot to say in response to something like this. Which is why my posts on the matter have pretty much been, "here, go throw money at it," because there's nothing else I can do.
