Just posting to show off my icon my friend [livejournal.com profile] kirathaune made. *points to icon* I saw the photo on BBC News and naturally the first thing that popped into my mind was Liz Ten from The Beast Below.

So, British subjects...is is disrespectful, do you think? Personally I think she's been going around saying that to people since the episode aired.

Not disrespectful. Someone on the BBC's election coverage last night compared her to a brand of beer. I wish I could remember what the comparison was, but it was late and I needed sleep.

Hee. That's sort of funny. The only 'British' beer I can think of off-hand is Newcastle Brown. Which I like, actually. :)

Well they compared her to Heineken which I think is Dutch. Just found the reference, I assume it's referring to an advertising slogan:
But then Peter Hennessy, one of that select band of constitutional scholars who explain the rules of our system to the rest of us, appeared on the BBC to deliver his ruling. The only person who could settle the matter definitively was, the professor declared, the Queen. "She is the Heineken beer of our system: there are parts of our constitution only she can reach."

Sounds dangerously close to advertising on the BBC to me. Naughty professor.

I think joking about the royals is the opposite of disrespectful; I think it's an obligation in the UK.

Awesome icon :) Taking the piss out of the Queen is pretty much mandatory, I reckon! Especially if done with affection - she is awesomesauce.

I know one could say that her life has been somewhat sheltered, but she has been through a lot. I'm sure she's sworn herself.

She's married to Prince Philip. If she can manage more than forty years of that without swearing, she's not royal, she's superhuman :-)

He's Greek, so I get where he might be coming from.

I was thinking rather more of his unfortunate habit of opening his mouth and leaping into it with both feet :-)

That's what I meant. Greeks are far more direct than English people.

Are they? Personally, I've never seen anything quite as direct as a pissed off British Northerner in full flow.

ie me ;-)

Absolutely not disrespectful at all, she is the bloody Queen and she does rule. Deeply factual!

If you ever listen to BBC comedy, you will quickly realise it isn't just acceptable to mildly mock the royal family, it's practically compulsory.
