Red Letter Day

Many years ago when Charlie was still just a little baby, my mother and I were at a garage sale, where a children's bedroom set was being sold for $100. It was one of those loft bed things with a desk and dresser/bookshelf to hold up the bed part of the bed. Charlie's room is small, and I said that would be perfect for his room someday, and since it was really inexpensive, I bought it, even though he was still in a crib and was going to remain there for at least another year. When he was around 2 and ready for a 'big-boy' bed, we bought a mattress and boxspring, but at 2 he was not ready for a loft bed, so the loft bed remained in the garage for several years until finally, today, we got it out, dusted it off, and installed it in his room! My friend came over and I was talking about how I have been wanting to get the bed out, as Charlie is really ready for it and it might actually keep him in his own bed at night if he had it, but my husband didn't want to get it out of the garage because it was 'behind too many things'. To be fair I think every time I brought it up it was kind of a last minute thing, but nonetheless my friend, who is a very no-nonsense, take charge sort of person said 'let's go look at it'. It really wasn't that hard to get out, and with the help of my husband who was, I think, shamed into coming out by the fact two 'girls' were doing this, we got the bed up. It fits perfectly in the room, really frees up space, and Charlie loves it. So hurrah. I am now very tired and dusty though.
In other news I got my copy of "Going Postal" by His Wonderfulness Terry Pratchett and it is excellent. It is all I can do to keep myself from reading it all in one go. I try to savor his books.
I find his books need to be re-read because there is so many things in it you just don't get it all the first time. This book, so far, is just brilliant. He is re-exploring the world of Golems, which is nice, and the whole mystical world of the postman is just wonderful.
And the adoption party was fun. I was the only one to bring something with the child's new name on it, which I thought was interesting. I was worried everyone was going to get the same thing I did, since there is a limited amount of things to engrave that would appeal to a 6 year old boy. I went to Things Remembered and got this keepsake box that has different sports balls on the top and is decorated in primary colors. His name is in a star in the middle of the lid. It is very cute.
I finally figured out a way to explain adoption to Charlie. I said D. didn't have a family to love him, and M. and J. didn't have a little boy to love, and so they found each other. Charile thought about it and then said, "M and J and D are a family." It was very sweet. And I think he doesn't want to change his name any more!
My goal for this week, now that I am on shortened hours, it to clean up my house. Wish me luck!
