I made a call to somewhere in NYC and inadvertently got the wrong number. The woman who answered the phone spent the entire conversation using a tone of voice that indicated quite clearly I didn't rate even common politeness, since I was so obviously interrupting her life.

When I asked for the person I was looking for she told me curtly that there was no one there by that name (only more impolitely) so I repeated the number I'd dialed and she snots that I'd dialed wrongly, and, as I'm apologising for the error, she hangs up on me.

Now I've done my time answering the phones, either as a receptionist or as someone's administrative assistant; I know it is at times a thankless and annoying job; but I have always made sure to speak politely and try to be as helpful as possible, even when the person on the other line is a complete and utter moron, because that was my job.

I don't understand how someone can get away with being as rude as this woman was, when it's her job to answer the phone.

Last night as my husband, Charlie and I were walking down the street to pick up our steak sandwiches (when you live near Philadelphia, you get good steak sandwiches) and there were these two skinhead looking, obviously drunk, guys standing on the balcony of their apartment (a house divided into two apartments, just so you know) shouting rude things at passersby. I wasn't really listening, and on the way back, Charlie and I were ahead of Kris as we were having a race, so they may have shouted something really bad, because when we got home Kris called the police. He then left to go to his friends house, and called me a few minutes later to tell me the police were actually leading the guys away in handcuffs.

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal to drink on your own balcony, and I don't think you can be arrested for shouting things, unless maybe you keep doing it after being told not to, so I wonder what the police found when they got there.

My husband, the vigilante.
