charliesmum: (Not Good to be King by kirathaune)

The play opened this last Thursday. We've had such bad luck on this show, it's unreal*. Aside from the fact every single person in the cast had a cold pretty much the entire rehearsal period we had the following:

2 family deaths
1 broken wrist
1 cracked rib
1 dislocated shoulder
1 dislocated finger
2 ear infections - one resulting in a burst ear drum
2 cases of the flu

The last - the flu nearly cost us our opening night.

The guy playing Paris was sick all week. Had a fever, etc. Decided he still wasn't well enough to show up on Thursday. Cue panic. Long story short, a friend of mine stepped in and read the part.

There was all this drama of should we charge the audience or not, but the 'trustee in charge of money' said yes. The audience - there were only 7 people - didn't mind.

Then Friday one of the women playing Helen (Thank goodness we have 2) dragged herself in and immediately threw up. She STILL would've gone on but we wouldn't let her. We worked around it. (It was for Trojan Women, and when she's not 'Helen' she's '5th Woman' but we were able to get by without her.)

I did my 'named part' on Saturday. My boyfriend and 3 best friends came. I feel like I didn't do well. I don't know why. I just didn't feel 'in the zone'.

So anyone reading this who was there, feel free to reassure me.

We had really good audiences on Saturday. I hope that continues.

*I blame the director for willfully mentioning the Scottish Play. I really do.

Two more weekends, hopefully our bad luck is at an end.

In other news - need some advice from you all. Nothing major. It's just that there's a mouse in my flat. I Was drinking my coffee this morning, staring blearily at the telly, when I saw this mouse run down my hallway. I'm on the 2nd floor, and honestly I barely even get bugs in the flat. I was, to say the least, surprised to see a mouse.

I'm not sure if I should tell the landlord or just get a trap myself. I want a humane trap, either way. The poor thing probably just got pushed in here because of the unusually bad weather, and I don't see the point in killing it. Besides, the only thing worse than a mouse in the house is a dead mouse in the house.

Also - one can't just capture a wild mouse and put it in a cage, right? They've got diseases and things, right?

You did great as Andromache! A little tentative at first, but at the point where they came for the baby, you went wild. It was extremely disturbing to hear you shrieking. You communicated the horror of that moment most effectively. Poignant. Horrifying.

re: mouse -- I'll come with you to free the little bugger if you like. :)

The only time we ever had a mouse, we went for one of the instant-kill traps because we just don't live in a place where letting it run free was feasible (most likely, it would just come back, or wander into someone else's house). I'd rather not kill mice, but I've no interest in living with them either.

So sorry to hear about the run of bad theatrical luck. As for the Scottish Play, well! I cannot blame you there. I do wish I were able to make it up to NJ to see both plays, but that's sadly not possible...

(And, for what it's worth, the last time I directed, I had a cast member e-mail me on opening day to inform me that she'd contracted tonsilitis. Everything turned out fine, but it was an absolutely nerve-wracking five or six hours.)

"I blame the director for willfully mentioning the Scottish Play. I really do."

Before I got to the footnote, I was wondering if there was a connection.

Go with the humane trap first and see if you have any luck. I find it's 50/50 on whether they work or not. Some mice are not interested and really can only be caught with a kill trap or poison.

I wouldn't recommend putting one in a cage. They are very cute, but diseases aside, they will try to escape at any chance. They want to be freeeee! o/~

I'm sorry you've had so many issues with the play so far. I'm guessing it's because the weather has been so crappy this winter. But I'm sure you were awesome!

The last time we had a cat in my house it was killed by my cat within thirty seconds, so I really have no advice.

Puhleeze. You were awesome. I was crying for reals behind you!

It's definitely the weather - I used to get the little grey mice all the time!

Maybe this is your excuse to get a cat! XD

There are small, blue humane traps, but like a poster said above, the odds of him taking the bait is low if he's a big guy. Also, do not touch or put in a cage, while pet mice and ratters are adorable, wild mice are disgusting little disease factories.

I had them once, and got a cat. There was mouse leavings everywhere! :/ Nasty little buggers.

You could try one of those sonic pest things to drive it out.
