I don't understand the terrorist mentality. I don't know what they expect to gain - Bush says 'don't yield' but how could we, even if we wanted to?
There's no logic to what they do - they aren't demanding anything - it's not like they are some kind of James Bond villian, sitting in his secret underground lair stroking a long haired cat and laughing maniacially. I don't think they even know what they are doing. They've been so long caught up in violence for the sake of violence, I don't think they would know what to do if all the world leaders told them, "Okay, you win. What do you want?"
And it would be nice if they realised all they are doing is creating more excuses for Bush and his cronies to continue their agenda of forcing Democracy on other countries in an effort to control the oil.
That being said, I wonder what would happen if someone from the IRA stood up and said in an irate voice, 'Dudes! We totally set those bombs. El Quada has nothing to do with it. It's us. Won't someone pay attention to our agenda? Hello?'
ETA: US President George Bush told reporters at the G8 Summit in Gleneagles that "the war on terror goes on." Fuck you, Bush. Just shut up. This is your fault. Terrorism isn't a country you can fight, it's a state of mind, and every bomb that is dropped in Iraq or anywhere else is like a seed that breeds more hatred of the country that dropped it.

on 2005-07-07 03:00 pm (UTC)No, they wouldn't. At all. What a fascinating way of putting it. I don't know that they *want* anything anymore, not any specific thing anyway, except to hurt and hate. It's such a horrible cycle. There's nothing we can do to pacify them or stop them and so we go about making things *worse*, as you said in your ETA, by bombing and shrieking freedomfreedomfreedom rhetoric and torturing people and ugh, ugh, ugh.

. . . yeah. I mean, I don't think I would have minded if he said it a couple days from now, but when that's being reported like it's his first reaction? No real understanding of the human suffering involved. But we already knew that.

on 2005-07-07 03:25 pm (UTC)I know it's more than a little far-fetched, but it's suspicious when our leaders started discussing Iraq instead of Afghanastan right after 9-11. *burns in anger*

on 2005-07-07 03:57 pm (UTC)this may well have happened *because* of Iraq. But it didn't happen within US borders, so it doesn't count.

on 2005-07-07 04:06 pm (UTC)I think there are some terrorist groups that have objectives in mind, but in this particular case, it really seems like violence for the sake of violence. They didn't issue any demands and the statement form the people claiming it made no sense.
I'm usually the first to blame Bush for everything, but this problem started long before him. Actually, back when the US acknowledged Israel in the 1940s. But he's damn well not doing anything to HELP.

on 2005-07-07 04:11 pm (UTC)I just knew Bush was going to say that. I'm surprised it took him so long to get his writers to adjust the speech.

on 2005-07-07 04:49 pm (UTC)I read that quote, and I was disgusted. I bet he was just gleeful to give that quote. (After all, his poll numbers are down.) And, yes, I am that cynical about Bush.
