I don't understand the terrorist mentality. I don't know what they expect to gain - Bush says 'don't yield' but how could we, even if we wanted to?

There's no logic to what they do - they aren't demanding anything - it's not like they are some kind of James Bond villian, sitting in his secret underground lair stroking a long haired cat and laughing maniacially. I don't think they even know what they are doing. They've been so long caught up in violence for the sake of violence, I don't think they would know what to do if all the world leaders told them, "Okay, you win. What do you want?"

And it would be nice if they realised all they are doing is creating more excuses for Bush and his cronies to continue their agenda of forcing Democracy on other countries in an effort to control the oil.

That being said, I wonder what would happen if someone from the IRA stood up and said in an irate voice, 'Dudes! We totally set those bombs. El Quada has nothing to do with it. It's us. Won't someone pay attention to our agenda? Hello?'

ETA: US President George Bush told reporters at the G8 Summit in Gleneagles that "the war on terror goes on." Fuck you, Bush. Just shut up. This is your fault. Terrorism isn't a country you can fight, it's a state of mind, and every bomb that is dropped in Iraq or anywhere else is like a seed that breeds more hatred of the country that dropped it.

No, they wouldn't. At all. What a fascinating way of putting it. I don't know that they *want* anything anymore, not any specific thing anyway, except to hurt and hate. It's such a horrible cycle. There's nothing we can do to pacify them or stop them and so we go about making things *worse*, as you said in your ETA, by bombing and shrieking freedomfreedomfreedom rhetoric and torturing people and ugh, ugh, ugh.

And I shouldn't say there's nothing we can do to stop them. We could certainly continue to work to decentralize and ultimately stamp out al-Qaeda by military means. But we gave up that fight almost entirely when we got into Iraq.

I've stopped checking the BBC page. They've adjusted the number of dead to thirty-three now and it'll likely increase as the day goes on.

Fuck you, Bush.

. . . yeah. I mean, I don't think I would have minded if he said it a couple days from now, but when that's being reported like it's his first reaction? No real understanding of the human suffering involved. But we already knew that.

*sigh* Even though i knew it was coming, i still felt angry when i saw Bush's face come on the screen. On the other hand, i believe Tony gave his most sincere speech ever. He was every bit as shaken as the rest of us.

I wonder the same thing I wondered about 9-11: if the powers that be didn't strategically "allow" certain things to happen so they could manipulate the public with them. It wouldn't be quite the same as when Hitler bombed his own people and told them it was the Allies, but it would be in the ballpark. In my mind, I could hear some of our leaders in a backroom saying, "Ok, that's all we need for now. There's no need to let anything else happen."

I know it's more than a little far-fetched, but it's suspicious when our leaders started discussing Iraq instead of Afghanastan right after 9-11. *burns in anger*

Oh, hell. I'm so, so furious that Bush just CANNOT let it go, that he has to continue to make political hay with the bodies of the victims (just as he did with 9/11), that he can't muster up any sympathy that doesn't come with an addendum about his War on Terra....

this may well have happened *because* of Iraq. But it didn't happen within US borders, so it doesn't count.

I think there are some terrorist groups that have objectives in mind, but in this particular case, it really seems like violence for the sake of violence. They didn't issue any demands and the statement form the people claiming it made no sense.

I'm usually the first to blame Bush for everything, but this problem started long before him. Actually, back when the US acknowledged Israel in the 1940s. But he's damn well not doing anything to HELP.

I just knew Bush was going to say that. I'm surprised it took him so long to get his writers to adjust the speech.

I read that quote, and I was disgusted. I bet he was just gleeful to give that quote. (After all, his poll numbers are down.) And, yes, I am that cynical about Bush.

It made me feel sick to look at Bush as he stood behind Blair at Gleneagles today. He can stick his fake sympathy!

Did you notice how our PM came straight back to London after hearing about the attacks,Shrubya? Funny that!
