Spent an hour an a half in this 'orientation' at unemployment today. 8:30 in the morniing in a cold, cold room while the lady walked everyone through the process. Very, very, slowly. Was as dull as it sounds, and I still don't know if I am going to get benefits because they have to call me on Friday to determine if I am still getting money from my old job, or something. See there was this bit that asked if I got any money in lieu of notice, and I did. One whole week. So now they are saying I might not be eligible because I am still getting money. Which I'm not. I'm sure it will all work out but still...blech.

The interviews yesterday went okay. The first one was part time, and it would be an interesting job, but I just don't think I can do part time, as much as I would like to. Can't really swing it financially, and in the summer when Charlie isn't in school, my entire paycheck would be going to some sort of day care, so, not worth it. Plus I wouldn't get paid for sick days or anything, and that's a drag.

The second job is interesting, and I think the guy liked me, but he has other people to interview, so I'm not really terribly optimistic. But it went well, so who knows.

And in the meanwhile, I am drifting along today in a state of ennui. I've a million things I could be doing, but I can't seem to muster up the energy to do anything.

In lighter news my friend in Florida sent Charlie a Toys R Us gift certificate, and so we used it to get him a copy of The Fantastic Four. He was very happy. Squealed with delight whenever the Human Torch did anything. It was a cute movie. I enjoyed it. Not groundbreaking by any means, but it didn't need to be. It was fun. Such pretty boys in it. Plenty of almost naked shots of the actor who was Johnny Storm, which was nice, and frankly I think that guy...Michael Whatever who was The Thing...is really hot, too. Should definitely go on [livejournal.com profile] hotbaldies if he isn't already. And Mr Fantastic was cute, and the guy from Charmed who was the evil guy was nice to look at until he went all Darth Vader with the mask.

It needs a sequel. I would like to see the Fantastic Four actually saving humanity, now that we've gotten the origins out of the way. In this movie they didn't really save people, other then themselves. I mean, they saved the people on the bridge, and that was cool, and they stopped the bad guy, but there was no evil plot to release chemicals into the water supply or whatever it is Super Villians tend to plot.

Aside from "Jeffery"*, has there been any romantic comedy that features a gay couple? Because Brokeback Mountain is all well and good, but I don't like serious, depressing films. I want a movie that is the standard "meet cute, humourous conflict, humours conflict resolution with over the top happy ending" type story, only with same sex couples.

*Which, despite being a comedy and really, really funny, still dealt with serious issues. i.e. AIDS, and isn't exactly what I'm talking about. Patrick Stewart rocked in it though.

I think its a bitter joke that most gay movies end miserably. Even my favorites don't end happy, per se: Kiss Me Guido or The Incredibly True Adventures of TWo Girls in Love. Some swear by But I'm a Cheerleader, which has the ever hot Clea Duvall, or Better Than Chocolate, which I think end happily. My all time favorite gay love film is When Night is Falling but it moves a bit slow, which is why I think not many people have seen it, but it does end happily.

I forgot about Kiss Me Guido. Good movie. Not really a gay love story, though, since the main guy wasn't gay. But it was a nice story about tolerance or something. Made me laugh, anyway.

Better than Chocolate sounds like fun.

Definitely check out Better Than Chocolate as well as But I'm a Cheerleader. Bound is fun, but very noir-ish. I'm trying to think of more fun ones...

Are you looking specifically for gay male romantic comedies? Or lesbians, too? There are some good ones out there, but they're hard to find if you don't know the title before you start looking. There are also some really awful ones out there (by which I mean the filmmaking/storyline/acting are just dreadful), so it's good to have a friend make recommendations. Let me know what you're looking for, and I'll be happy to offer suggestions.

Either, really. Just a nice love story about a gay couple, girls or boys.

One of my favorites is Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss, which stars a pre-Will & Grace Sean Hayes. It's kind of comic angst, and bittersweet, but you still feel good in the end.

The Broken Hearts Club has something for everybody, but it's a little too cynical to be thought of as a romantic comedy.

I've heard that Trick is very good, but I've never seen it, so I wouldn't be able to tell you.

Gay romantic comedies are hard to come by, because too many filmmakers seem to think that if you have films with gay characters at their center, then you have to make up for it by dealing with serious issues.

I, personally, would love to see a romantic comedy where the fact that it's two guys at the center of it all isn't even addressed; it's just accepted as normal by everyone else in the film. *sigh* Maybe I'll have to buckle down and write me a screenplay.

Yes! That's what I mean. Just a love story, but it happens to be two guys (or two girls) instead of one of each. And the fact that they are gay isn't an issue. It just is.

Trick is hilarious and I love it.

All Over the Guy is one of my favorites.

Maurice, of course is the classic Gay Happy Ending movie, if you like that sumptous beautiful Merchant-Ivory schtick.

Torch Song Trilogy at least ends hopefully, if not entirely happily.

Velvet Goldmine is beautiful and weird, but not exactly a happy ending, either.

*giggles* I can't believe there is a community called hot_baldies. I've tried to explain lj to my dad, and how there is a community for nearly anything one can think of - I'll have to tell him about this one to help get my point across.

Good luck with the job-getting *hugs* I'm crossing my fingers for you!

Brokeback Mountain looks unbearably depressing. I mean, I'm going to see it because it's gay cowboys, but it will undoubtedly depress the hell out of me. Um...I'm trying to think of gay movies now :-P I hear "But I'm a Cheerleader" is amazing, though I've never seen it. I'll get back to you on that. I never heard of this "Jeffery." Must investigate.

I have a list archived somewhere in the computer of gay movies...I'll have a look tomorrow. (I'd also recommend the Zanna, Don't! soundtrack because it's fantastic. I can upload it for you, if you want.)

Good luck with the job-finding!

There's a British gay movie that has a brillaint ending, just an all-over feelgood movie, Beautiful Thing. French film Just A Question of Love is another I'd recommend, wonderfully romantic and happy. Under One Roof is about a Chinese-American gay man living with his mother and grandmother, deeply closeted, when openly gay Robert moves in to the apartment downstairs. Latter Days is amazing, definitely recommended, though it has harrowing moments. Big Eden set in gorgeous Montana features older men in love- magical, not to be missed. Defying Gravity is about a college boy coming out, though it features gay bashing it's very uplifting.

There's always "The Birdcage," or, even better, "La Cage Aux Folles," from which it was adapted. That's not a boy-meets-boy love story so much as it is a boy-still-loves-boy story.

And "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert," which isn't a romantic comedy, but is good fun.

"Jeffrey" depressed the ever-loving crap out of me, aside from the bit about cater-waiters. I was only there for the Patrick Stewart. And the male lead, Michael B. Whozzisface, used to creep me out on Days of our Lives, and still creeps me out.

Oh, yeah, and "The Wedding Banquet." That was comedy-ish.

One of my favorites is Saving Face, which just came out this year - OMG SO ADORABLE. Better Than Chocolate is, similarly, lots of fun. The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls In Love is cute. But I'm a Cheerleader is pretty awesome. D.E.B.S. I haven't seen, but it's apparently an action/comedy about a team of lesbian James Bonds. Oh, and Fried Green Tomatoes!!! Idgie and Ruth are totally gay, though they downplayed it a fair amount in the movie (as opposed to the book). It's still totally there.

Oh, and this isn't what you asked, but I saw part of Ma Vie en Rose recently, and OMG CUTEST LITTLE TRANSGIRL EVER.

Oh, The Birdcage! Tell me you've seen that!

Do you like Kevin Kline? I think you may have said you do; if so, check out In and Out.

And in the "lesbian movies I have issues with but their scripts are pretty effective" category, Chasing Amy is fun, probably Kevin Smith's best, even if the middle turns into every straight guy's fantasy of lesbianism ever. Likewise, Kissing Jessica Stein is amusing, though I've plenty of issues with it.

If you'd asked for angsty lesbian movies, the list would be a hell of a lot longer. :)

I love In and Out. Forgot about that one. Seems there are a few more 'fun' stories out there than I realised.

If one of us ever gets to visit the other one, we'll watch some. :)
